As it passes through the Upper Geyser Basin the Firehole River has numerous steam vents or fumaroles which often cover sections of the river with a foggy layer of steam.
In the foreground, runoff from the Grand Geyser leaves a colorful trail. In the background, multiple geysers and steam vents spewing steam in the air.

Silex Thermal Pool
This is a bacteria mat formed by the runoff from Silex Thermal Pool in the Lower Geyser Basin. Although the water is warm the surrounding air temperature is well below freezing; hence, the coating of rime ice on the tree remnants.
