By late afternoon beautiful clouds had moved into the area offering soft filtered light, interesting textures, and wonderful color.

And then, almost in the blink of an eye, the soft filtered light turned into a spectacular light show. I'm sure the 3 folks standing on the dune ridge enjoyed it as much as we did.

Valles Caldera National Preserve

This preserve is among the newest additions to the NP system. It encompasses a dormant volcano, numerous valley meadows and streams. And for you Longmire fans (Netflix), this is also where Longmire's cabin is located.

Tented Rocks National Monument

Well, you can see how it got it's name. We hiked through a beautiful slot canyon to reach a mesa top that provided this stunning view of of the tented rocks.

This is a cabin that was used in the Movie "City Slickers". It's a short distance off the main highway on the way to Ghost Ranch.

This 70 square mile area managed by the BLM was once an ancient seabed and swamp. Now it is desert wilderness with no facilities whatsoever. We hiked in about 1 1/2 miles to an area known as the rock garden where these images were taken.
