The Palouse hills were formed over tens of thousands of years from wind blown dust and silt, called "loess", from dry regions to the south west. Seen from above, they look like giant sand dunes because they were formed in much the same way.

This pool, in the Lower Geyser Basin, is becoming one of my favorite subjects. It seems so different each time I visit.

Grand Prismatic Spring

Probably the best known spring in Yellowstone. There is always so much steam over it that it's difficult to see more than a small part of the spring at a time. The textures and leading lines of it's bacterial mat make infinitely interesting photography subjects.

Excelsior Geyser Crater

Located in the Midway Geyser Basin, Excelsior is also covered with steam most of the time and, at over 300' in width, is even larger than it's neighbor, Grand Prismatic.

Gibbon River at Sunrise

This is the Gibbon River winding through a meadow near Madison Junction. We were on our way for a sunrise shoot in the Geyser Basins but had to stop here long enough to capture this wonderful light.

Firehole Spring

Located across from the Lower Geyser Basin along Firehole Lake Drive, this spring is one of the most photogenic that I've found. It make a beautiful early morning shot with a colorful sky in the background.

Lower Geyser Basin

This bacterial mat is fed by the output of Silex Spring. This shot was taken on a very foggy morning which gave it just the right ambiance in my opinion. I love the silver-gray roots on the mat. Such a nice contrast to an otherwise soft and surreal scene.

Again, the foggy conditions were perfect for this subject, lending an aura of mystery to the scene. I also like the blue, white and yellow colors in the foreground.

Opalescent Pool

Located in the Black Sands Geyser Basin, this pool is surrounded by "Bobby Sox Trees", so named because of the white silica layer surrounding the tree's lower trunks.

Bison and Bird

A bison still partially covered with it's winter coat meandering through a meadow near Morman Row. The bird just happened on the scene as I took the shot.

Teton's Mormon Row Barn

The Grand Teton Range makes a beautiful backdrop for this Mormon Row barn as first morning light illuminates the barn's redish surface. I loved having the small stream in the foreground - I've not seen other shots with it included.
