Quiver Trees in Namibia
Our first photo stop in Namibia was a Quiver Tree forest near Keetmanshoop. This scene was shot near sunset on our first day here.
Our first photo stop in Namibia was a Quiver Tree forest near Keetmanshoop.
Silhouetted quiver trees shot shortly before sunrise.
Soft morning twilight and the earth shadow.
Arching trunk and limb frame another tree nicely with the earth shadow behind.
Same composition as earlier in the morning, now with warm highlights from a donning sunrise.
Kolmanskop - A Deserted Mining Settlement
Our next photo stop is at Kolmanskop, an old deserted german diamond mining settlement near Luderitz. These scenes show various rooms that have been overtaken by the sand dunes.
Sossusvlei Dune Field
The Sossusvlei dune field in Namib-Naukluft National Park is the first of our two prime photo destinations. These red sand dunes go as high as 1000'.
A massive dune shot just before sunset on our first day in the park. It's a wonderful play of light and shadow, vertical and horizontal lines.
Sunrise shot of the dunes with a pan and trees in the foreground.
Soft subtle light and a dune ridge line snaking up and away seemingly forever.
Close-up of a ridge line leading up into the dune field.
Another shot across the pan, this time with a very different look and feel as the shadows have hardened.
Sossusvlei Dead Vlei Area
The famous Dead Vlei is a large salt pan with dead camel thorn trees, some 1000 years old. We shot these old trees from various angles as the sun set.
Walvis Bay Flamingoes
Our next photo stop was Walvis Bay, well known for it's large flamingo colonies. The broad stripe of pink and the bird's reflections in this scene were interesting.
Two lesser flamingoes approach from the left but the two greater flamingoes take no notice.
Well, it wasn't just flamingoes. This little egret made quite a splash going after it's lunch.
